The story of Ragnarök is a cautionary tale of how lost connectedness to the natural world nearly leads to humanity’s demise in a series of natural disasters and social collapse. The myth is believed to originate from an actual climate disaster in Iceland year 536 where the ashes of a volcanic eruption blocked out the sun for three years. The event caused a series of strange natural phenomena and lead to the starvation of over half the Scandinavian population.Today almost 1500 years later we face a parallel in history; a different kind of climate apocalypse is looming in the horizon. This time around, it will not be known by three years of winter, but more likely 3 Years of Summer. Like so many other oral tales, the prophecy of Ragnarök is a reminder from past times. It expands itself via songs, runes and artworks to connect us with the lived experience of our ancestors.The anthropocene has given birth to the persistently rising temperatures, which year after year and data point after data point still seems to be ignored or under prioritized by the World’s leaders. How can this be? Why is this terrible threat not acted upon with great urgency by those capable? This project is an attempt to collect and present means of relating to the world in new ways by “looking back” in time, specifically at Nordic history and art from before and after the introduction of Christianity in Denmark. It follows the thesis that our past also speaks into our future – out of time. It’s an invitation to work towards a recovery of our&nbsp;traditional knowledge in order to create an maintain a real relationship to the living world alongside our current understanding of the world. How might seeing ourselves more as part of a larger system help us in our struggle when facing the gravest challenges of the 21st century? 3 Years of SummerRune stone, projection mapping and autonomously publicated anthologyThis project was made possible by my collaborators and was funded by CCAM. The mighty tree whose trunk rises at the geographical center of the Norse spiritual cosmos. The rest of that cosmos, including the Nine Worlds, is arrayed around it and held together by its branches and roots, which connect the various parts of the cosmos to one another. Because of this, the well-being of the cosmos depends on the well-being of Yggdrasil. phenomena exist simultaneously with our own. One's own sense of reality often carries the potential of tunnel vision and once you think you’re closing in on what is real, you’re only further isolating what you believe to be the truth from everything else. My counter thesis to conventional truth-seeking is to look outside what is real, at the unreal or the unfathomable. Filtering out reality has the potential to become an antidote to various types of blindness to the world. Sieving implies removal, but it is also entails revealing, investigating or analyzing – like looking under a rock that you’ve never before lifted. One world becomes two new worlds. And upon return what before seemed real may now appear alien and stripped of the meaning it used to have, but with previously unseen prospects of significance or understanding. Filtering out reality should perhaps be understood more as filtering in reality, since what passes through a sieve is a condensed selection of the original input. and they often inherit the best qualities of both. "The mule is an example of hybrid vigor, Charles Darwin wrote: The mule always appears to me a most surprising animal. That a hybrid should possess more reason, memory, obstinacy, social affection, powers of muscular endurance, and length of life, than either of its parents, seems to indicate that art has here outdone nature." They are typically very strong for their size compared to horses and are able to cope with bad weather better than donkeys. Mules rarely become ill and their behavior is Intelligent and sensitive. In the right home, they can make great companions for other equines, and wonderful pets. However, if they are unhandled or not correctly trained, mules have the potential to be dangerous. In order to make this concept work, one must design both the wide and the regular state of each character at the same time – keeping in mind how specific decisions of one state would play out in the other. The result is are sets of letterforms with vastly different expressions, but which at the same time share almost the exact same inner and outer curves, qua making them a very fruitful couple for display typography. Much like being lost – first one must accept that they are lost, only then can one reposition to understand and navigate the world with new perspectives and ideas. I worked with performer Kellie Lynch to interpret the sensation of finding oneself in isolation and the ensuing struggle to regain one’s orientation by moving through time and space. To capture the moving body I worked with a motion capture studio system and true depth infrared sensors. The story pays homage to Plato’s Cave Allegory and the struggle to question ones own point of view. In a time where division manifest and where we are still transcending out of the Covid isolation, it is more important than ever to question our perceptions of reality and to enable ourselves to engage with each other. Between IsolationFilm, Performance, Extended RealityMade in collaboration with performer Kellie Lynch and musician Cody Boyce and screened at the opening ceremony of Yale Schwarzman Center. A person is recorded in 3D and the capture is streamed with a 10 second time delay to the augmented reality environment. The resistance of blue light deflate your pupils and its intentions remain unknown. Tipping your head forward to mask the rays makes you look down, the surface of your hands are blue, frozen in time. More blue lights appear in the horizon and surely more will await around the corner. You move through them, carrying the light on your skin. What purpose do they serve? Who put them up? Will they work for you or against you if something happens? The blue lights are security measures and are scattered throughout the domains which the Ivy-league universities occupy. This publication explores the “Blue Phones” in New Haven and the public discourse and history of campus police and security. In 1894 Yale University established the first private campus police force which today are part of New Haven’s ‘triple occupation’ of Hampden and New Haven PD. Yale PD officers operate as fully authorized police, but as a private institution, YPD are not obliged to the same public disclosure, responsibilities or transparency. Through investigative research this publication unravels the history of YPD through the university police archives from first handwritten notes to modern email warning systems and scrutinizes security vs. safety and property vs people. pandemic and the anticipation of both change and more lockdowns.The animation was part of a 47min Projection Mapping Show by Klasse Kartak for Graphic Design, University of Applied Arts Vienna. The Location is the Flaktower at Augarten in the 2nd district. This Tower, with a height of 42 meters, is one of six large reinforced concrete defense and protection structures in Vienna, built between 1942 and 1945 as huge air raid shelters with mounted anti-aircraft guns and fire control systems. Prior to launching their platform, the founding team approached me to collaborate on the branding and visual profile of Ukurant and its anual exhibitions. I designed the visual identity on and collaborated on how to position themselves and communicate with their peers. Their first anual exhibition “Ukurant Objects” was part of 3 Days of Design 2020 and made with collaborators Peter Vinther (photography) and Emil Qvist (exhibition design). Ukurant is a community and platform that not only provides momentary exposure, but aims to positively contribute to young designers future work by establishing a network and community where experiences and competences can be shared across disciplines.
